First Aid and CPR Training – Why Is It Important?

first aid course Toronto
You must have heard about First Aid and CPR courses being provided at hospitals, office & residential complexes and other institutions. Chances are that you opted out of attending them to do something more “productive” and “meaningful” with your time. If you belong to such a category, you are requested to definitely read on.

Let’s begin with the bottom line – first aid and CPR training are like umbrellas; you don’t need them most of the time but when you do and find yourself without them, you are in a real soup! They are actually much more important than the umbrella which you carry in your bag as they can save lives. Let us analyze why you should opt for their training.

Emergencies Can Occur Anywhere

There is no time or place for emergencies. They can happen anywhere. From burns in the kitchen to drowning in the swimming pool – you never know when you will witness a medical emergency. Would you like to stand in the crowd watching the victims helplessly or would you rather arm yourself with first aid CPR training and step out to save the day?

Save A Person’s Life With CPR Training In Toronto

CPR training Toronto
In a bewildering,near-tragic incident reported by CBC News early this year, a Toronto woman saved the life of a man who went into sudden cardiac arrest during a gym workout.

The woman later told how she was shocked that everyone just froze in fear and no one intervened. If it wasn’t for her, the man would have died there and then, with no one to save him from a terrible, senseless death.

She decided to intervene when she saw a staff member walk over to the man as he was lying on the floor, face blue. The employee then leaned down, put a defibrillator on the floor beside the man and stood back in dumbfounded confusion.

It was lucky for the victim that the 29 year old woman received her CPR training Toronto earlier, and knew how to deliver cardiopulmonary resuscitation. She had the training done when she enrolled to work as a flight attendant, and if she weren’t there, the man’s life would have ended.

All You Need to Know about First Aid and CPR

first aid and CPR training
First aid and CPR consist of the steps which should be taken when a person suffers from a sudden injury or a bout of illness. These steps often prove life-saving and thus hold importance. Let us discuss them in detail so that you can realize the importance of acquiring these skills.

What is First Aid?

It comprises of the basic procedures which should be imparted to a sick or injured person before medical help arrives. They may be the simple steps of dressing up a small wound or the proper method of tying up a broken body part and more. It prevents the worsening of the sickness or injury and in many cases also prevents death. The presence of a person trained in first aid is very reassuring whether you are in the office or out on an adventure tour.

Why Everyone Should Go For First Aid CPR Training

First Aid CPR training
Summer is here and it brings it own set of season related dangers.

It is not new that we are fragile creatures, and it’s mostly the realization of just how fragile we are that keeps us safe most of the time.

But caution is often not enough, and dangers tend to catch us unawares. That’s where we need to be able to take care of others and ourselves. Often being able to do that will mean the difference between life or death.

The American Red Cross has identified some pretty alarming statistics on this topic. This statistic is for all of North America, but it’s still very relevant to us here in Canada.
  • The leading cause of death for children below 4 is drowning.
  • A child that age can drown as fast as within one minute.
  • 88 percent of all cardiac arrest scenarios occur at home.
  • The number of cardiac arrest victims that survive is below 7%.
  • The reason for that is because people near them didn’t know CPR Recertification.

Where to go or not go for CPR Recertification?

CPR recertification
Keeping your CPR certification valid is very important for several good reasons.

One is that you are legally bound to have a valid CPR certificate to perform cardiovascular resuscitation in Canada.

If you find yourself in a situation where you perform this life saving technique without a valid license, you may be facing legal action. This chance becomes higher still if there is suspicion that your actions caused harm or contributed to the emergency rather than help resolve it.

The second reason is that CPR recertification is often, and luckily, the only time when most people get to practice it and make sure they still remember how it’s done.

Avoid Hidden Health Risks With a Red Cross CPR Course

CPR course
One of the problems with health emergencies is that they always come without warning.

They don’t call ahead to ask if we’re ready or not. They just occur.

It can happen at any time and anywhere at all. If you are in a public pace and suffer from an injury and/or cardiac arrest, there’s a larger chance there’s someone there who’s First Aid certified. But what do you do when a loved one gets hurt, only you’re out camping or somewhere an ambulance will take too long to reach?

Moreover, what if some risks can be avoided if spotted on time?

There are precluding symptoms for a heart attack or cardiac arrest you can spot if you took a Red Cross CPR course.

Importance Of CPR Training In Richmond Hill

CPR training in Richmond Hill
When we think of CPR training, the situations we picture are very extreme scenarios.

We keep thinking they are not going to happen to us… up until the moment they occur. We try to keep our families safe, watch over our kids and hope for the best.

The problem is, when disaster strikes, it always comes without warning.

And the difference between life and death is often not the 911 response time. What it often really depends on is whether there’s someone around who took a CPR course.

If you are still considering whether you should seek out and take our CPR training in Richmond Hill, here’s a question that can help anyone decide.

How To Handle A CPR Emergency in North York?

CPR courses
A CPR emergency can be one of two things – a terrifying, mind numbing disaster, or a challenge. A frightful challenge, to be sure, but one that you can overcome, given the necessary tools and knowledge necessary for the struggle.

Our North York CPR courses are here to provide people with the necessary skills to determine whether CPR is needed, and then provide this lifesaving technique with calm efficiency.

In this blog we will cover a few basic mistakes that can make an inexperienced or overly stressed person fail in performing CPR.

Always tilt the victim’s head back. Being unconscious often means the victim is suffering from a breathing obstruction. The purpose of CPR is to deliver oxygen-rich blood to their brain. Not allowing for the oxygen to enter the lungs by positioning the victim’s head at a specific angle is the first bad mistake you can make and will likely result in loss of life.

Save Life with First Aid Course in Toronto

Every season has its own set of dangers, and winter hasn’t quite left us this year. Let’s therefore talk about cold-related health hazards and how our First Aid course in Toronto can help you deal with them.
It’s true that Canadian winter has been coming and going a lot in recent years, but it’s still notoriously cold.
We love spending time outdoors. Skiing, sledding, skating and even camping in the cold, crisp weather, are only a few of the favourite Canadian pastimes.
But with fun in extreme weather also come cold-related risks that we need to be able to recognize, prevent, and – in case that didn’t work – deal with, very very quickly. And all those risks usually sum up to one major risk – hypothermia.
Hypothermia is a cold-caused medical crisis with various degrees of danger, ranging from health failure all the way to severe risk of death. Let’s examine different degrees of this condition.

CPR Training: Be prepared to Respond in a Cardiac Emergency!

There’s a saying – home is where the heart is.

It is sadly ironic, because it’s also very true with respect to the statistic covering cardiac arrest and heart attack cases.

Most of them occur at home.

The reason it’s sad is because you are less likely to die of cardiac arrest  else. In a mall, airport or on the street there’s a better chance that someone can save your life by administering CPR.

When your family member is having a seizure or cardiac arrest, you can call 911 almost immediately, but that may not be good enough. Once this type of medical disaster strikes – minutes and even seconds are crucial to the outcome. Does the victim live or die, and if they live, will he or she recover fully or partially? Those fleeting moments of oxygen loss may result in brain injury and loss of speech, motoric functions, and more.

The only thing that can guarantee the damage is truly minimized is to have someone at home who knows first aid and cpr training procedures. If your loved one is having a cardiac arrest, it is imperative to act fast.

What Are The ABC’s of CPR?

When faced with a medical emergency and a person is unconscious, there are several steps you should take to ensure that persons survival. When you take one of our First Aid & CPR courses offered in North York you will be learning all these steps. Using the ABC’s of CPR, you could be the determining factor between life and death.

A – Airway

You must first check to confirm if the person has an open airway. The airway is the tube that allows air to pass into or out of the lungs; making it impossible to breath if it is blocked. To open it, you must perform a head-tilt/chin-lift. To do this, you need to tilt the head back and lift the chin. This action shifts the tongue away from the back of the throat, and allows air to reach the lungs. Make sure you know how exactly to do that by taking our North York CPR/AED course.

B – Breathing

Next you will check for breathing. For a maximum of 5 to 10 seconds you will need to check for normal breathing. With your face turned towards the person’s torso, right above the person’s mouth, listen for breaths and look to see if the chest is rising and falling. If you only see an infrequent gasp of air, the person is not breathing normally.

Knowing What to do When Disaster Strikes in 2017

Disaster never calls ahead of time before it comes knocking.

It will crash your party in the middle of the night, or catch up with you on the road. It can sneak up on you, out or indoors. It loves catching people in swimming pools and lakes.

And sometimes large scale tragedies occur, such as the all to recent fire that raged across Port MacMurray, or the huge blackout we had two winters ago all over Toronto and the GTA.

The only thing we can do is prepare and keep a cool head when it happens.

But what does it mean to be prepared, apart from taking a Red Cross CPR course?

If you really want to be ready for an emergency, just follow this short list of New Year Resolutions for 2017.

Prep a First Aid and Emergency Gear Kit

Get a first aid kit for emergencies only (separate from the every day one) and keep it fully stocked at all times. Put it in a small pack with a list of additional important survival items.

Those include a three day supply of water and non-perishable food, a flashlight plus spare batteries and/or solar charger, multi tool, copies of all important cards and documents (proof of address, traveling documents, insurance policies, birth certificates, etc.), extra cash, and a spare cellphone, fully charged.

Canadian Red Cross Tips to Reduce Holiday Stress

The Holiday season is a blissful and fun time of year, but it can also be extremely taxing.

You have to get presents for everyone, call your friends and write greeting cards to family members and co-workers, not to mention cooking, traveling and other enjoyable but still pretty stressful activities.

The Canadian Red Cross has issued a list of tips and advice intended to help families and individuals in Canada enjoy the holiday season better by shaking off its stressful effects or avoiding them altogether.

Canadian Red Cross Tips to Reduce Holiday Stress
This publication comes as part of their seasonal Red Cross First Aid and CPR preparation program. If you’re wondering at the connection, suffice to say that accident prevention is far more easy to achieve than damage control when an accident has already happened. After all, driving while stressed in the typical Canadian winter is more than a bit hazardous. A stressed person is not only unhappy, but also not exactly safe.
